The New Bedford Whaling Museum has uploaded hundreds of digital scans of logbooks from the ships that would sail out often for multi-year journeys in search of whales and the precious oil inside them. If you want some excellent examples of 19th century handwriting I would encourage you to check them out. Try to see how much you can read. Often the logbooks contain little pen and ink illustrations that correspond with log entries. I’ve created a set of notebooks based on the drawings from the logbook of the whaling ship ‘Roman’ which sailed out of New Bedford, Massachusetts. The voyage lasted almost 4 years.
